Mount Vernon was founded in 1805 and is the county seat in Knox County. Named after the plantation owned by President George Washington, Mount Vernon is home to Mount Vernon Nazarene University with nearby Kenyon College in Gambier. Knox County was named after Henry Knox, the first US Secretary of War. It is home to Siemens (formerly Rolls-Royce Energy Systems and Cooper Industries) and Ariel Corp, both of which manufacture components for the natural gas industry.
